The Institute Of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI), which regulates the cost and management accountancy (CMA) profession in the country, is now going global. It has made the “employability & techno-skills development training programme’ in its CMA curriculum for intermediate students mandatory from August 2020 Batch onwards.

Students pursuing the CMA course should possess robust employability skills to become future-ready professionals.” Said CMA Balwinder Singh, President, ICAI, during the E-Career awareness programme organized in association with Calcutta University on August 8.

"We are launching SAP Finance Power User Course, Microsoft Certicication, Cambridge University Certification and E-Filling as a bouquet of World Class Employability and Techno-Skill Training facilities for intermediate students from August batch onwards. This step, coupled with online exam facility for students (from home/centre-specific), I believe takes ICAI global."

The ICAI is the largest CMA body in Asia and second largest in the world, with over 5 lakh students on roll and 85,000 qualifies CMAs under its fold.

The Institute of Cost Accountants of India was first formed as a registered limited company in the year 1944 with the initial objective of promoting, regulating and developing the profession of Cost Accountancy in the country. The Institute was specially asked by the Government, to vet the Cost Plus Contracts of Armed Forces during World War II period.

Post-Independence, the Institute got statutory recognition when the Parliament of India enacted "The Cost and Works Accountants Act" (Act No. 23rd of 1959), a special Act, on May 28, 1959 to accord statutory recognition as a premier professional Institute with the objectives of promoting, regulating and developing the profession of Cost and Management Accountancy.

In 2012, the name of the Institute was changed from “The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India” (ICWAl) to The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI).
